Justice W. Powlus

Justice W. Powlus is an attorney admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in October 2021. He is a 2018 graduate of Bloomsburg University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (and concentration in Legal Studies), and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2021 (completing the Health Law Certificate program during his studies). Justice briefly interned with the Superior Court of Pennsylvania in the summer after his 1L year, and as a research assistant to two of his professors at the School of Law in the summer after his 2L year.

He gained exposure to working with health law-related issues in his 3L year, participating in Pitt Law’s Health Law Clinic in the fall, and through extern work with a Pittsburgh hospital’s legal department in the spring. In the Health Law Clinic, he participated in various guardianship and special education matters, working in an interdisciplinary setting to achieve the best outcomes for patients and clients. During his externship, Justice worked on research regarding various regulatory matters in the health law field, as well as a multitude of other health-law related issues. He also served as the Lead Executive Editor for the University of Pittsburgh School of Law’s Journal of Law and Commerce in his 3L year.

Over the past two years, Justice has concentrated on several key areas in his training and work. These include recovering unresolved self-pay balances resulting from third-party liability, estates, auto, or workers’ compensation cases. He has also focused on addressing issues related to medical necessity, timely filing, and inappropriate appeals made to insurers. Additionally, Justice has worked with ERISA plans to ensure that claims are paid in accordance with the plan’s terms, collaborated with attorneys to facilitate insurance disputes, and engaged patients in a patient-centric manner to resolve high-dollar issues with health insurers or third parties.
